The microphone is the most intimate connection to the performer. It captures the color, texture, and emotion of a performance.
A Pre-amp can be crystal clear, add punch, create grit, or even “soften” the sound. A touch of compression can be added as well.

“on the flattering side of neutral, and might best be described as solid and subjectively transparent, with no harsh edges”

“Whether in solid-state or tube mode, the sound of the hybrid preamps is rich and characterful, in a pleasingly musical way, but what makes this preamp particularly useful is the ability to blend the tube and solid-state sounds to taste.”

The Audio Interface is all about conversion. The analog signal is converted to digital, and the digital signal is converted to audio.
The Engineer needs to be able to hear the performance, either in Mono, Stereo, or Surround. The accuracy of the monitoring directly affects the perception of the recording during tracking, mixing, and mastering.

Monitors produce the sound. Accuracy of sound helps ensure that the mix translates well to the “real world”. For the engineer the monitors are the intimate connection to the ears, similar to how a microphone is the connection to the performer.
The headphone monitor system is how the performer will understand her own performance.

Pro Tools Ultimate HDX with an AVID S3 control surface.
The DAW is the engineers tool to create the recording. For the engineer it is the artists palatte. There is no “perfect” palatte, except the one the engineer is comfortable and effective using.
